Ribbon


 

Ribbon is used for thermal transfer printing where heat is used to melt ribbon onto label stock. The different types of ribbon material include wax, wax-resin, and resin.

WAX

Wax ribbon is typically used for short-term use such as mail, warehouse, and retail labels.

Pros: Low cost, moisture resistant, rich black color.

Cons: Susceptible to damage, no use over 160˚, less durable.

WAX-RESIN

Wax-resin is recommended for environments that experience changing temperatures.

Pros: Scratch/smudge resistant, UV and abrasion resistant, prints on rough/smooth surfaces.

Cons: Less cost effective than wax ribbon.

RESIN

Resin ribbon is typically reserved for specialized cases like label sensitive medical or chemical applications which require extreme durability.

Pros: Durable, dark images, permanent labeling uses, good for harsh environments.

Cons: Resin ribbon is the most expensive option.
